China and Japan have a long history of tension and confrontation. Many still remember the Nanjing massacres from the second world war… a fresh wound that many Chinese are not ready to forgive. And, it all erupted in April 2005 when the Japanese government apparently published their new history books… that did not mention the Nanjing massacres.
Since the Chinese government basically blessed the protests, the police stood by and did not intervene as protesters broke windows of Japanese businesses and restaurants. Though the reason for the protest was serious, the faces in the crowd were smiling… it was a “fun day out” for most.
